Hyderabad: Facing an internal revolt over its list of candidates for the Telangana state assembly elections, the Congress party on Wednesday released an amended list with ten new names.

With this the total number of candidates has gone up to 75.

Earlier Congress had announced the names of 65 candidates.

Meanwhile, supporters of those Congress leaders left out of the first list continued angry protests, while some senior party members announced their resignation.

The new list includes the name of state Congress spokesman D. Shravan, in the high profile Khairatabad constituency, and Vishnuvardhan Reddy in Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills.

The party has fielded K.K. Mahinder Reddy against powerful Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leader and minister K. Taraka Rama Rao in Sricilla.

The first list had triggered a wave of rebellion in the party with former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Narayana Rao and National Students Union of India state unit president Venkat sending in their resignations.

Meanwhile, Bhikshapati Yadav announced that he would contest as a rebel candidate in Serilingampally constituency.

Similarly another state spokesman Manne Krishank had also revolted against the official candidate Sarve Satyanarayana in the Secunderabad Cantonment constituency.

Meanwhile the Communist Party of India (CPI), a constituent of the Grand Alliance also released the names of its candidates in three constituency allotted to it.

State CPI secretary Chada Venkat Reddy is to contest the Husnabad constituency in Karimnagar, while Bhanut Vijay Babu is in the race for Vyra and Gunda Mallesh is eyeing Bellampally.

Announcing the names of the candidates, senior party leader Palla Venkat Reddy said they would file nominations on November 17 and 18.

He rejected the criticism of senior Communist Party of India-Marxist leaders that the CPI had committed suicide by joining the Grand Alliance for the sake of three seats.

Meanwhile, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao filed his nomination papers from Gajwel constituency on Wednesday.

Earlier, as per his 25-year-old tradition, he worshipped at Sri Venkateshwara temple at Konayapally and took the blessings from the priests at the temple.

KCR placed his papers at the feet of the deity during the rituals.

Senior minister and nephew T. Harish Rao accompanied KCR when he filed the nomination before the Revenue Divisional Officer at Gajwel at 2.34pm.

As KCR is a firm believer in astrology and religious practices, the priests fixed the “auspicious” timing of filing of nomination.

Addressing a meeting in Konayapally village KCR said he had fulfilled all the major promises including round the clock free power supply to farmers.

“Next year the Kaleswaram project would be completed and I will wash the feet of Sri Venkateshwara at Konayapally temple with the waters from Kaleswaram,” he said.

Interestingly Konayapally falls in Siddipet assembly constituency from where Harish Rao was contesting. KCR lauded the work done by Harish Rao as irrigation minister and urged the people to elect with a majority of one lakh votes.
