Chowkidar remark row: Rahul says I regret, Supreme Court asks for apology

Dubai: The Indian National Congress president Rahul Gandhi will apologise through a fresh affidavit for wrongly attributing the "Chowkidar chor hai" remark to India's top court. On Tuesday, he said will apologise to the Supreme Court for linking the court's order to his "Chowkidar Chor hai" political jibe at PM Narendra Modi.
The SC had pulled up the Congress president contempt petition was filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, and asked him to accept his mistake.
According to Indian newspaper, Times of India: “Rahul Gandhi's counsel A M Singhvi admitted to the top court that there were three errors in Rahul Gandhi's afffidavit and said the Congress president will file a new affidavit tendering an apology by Monday.The Supreme court allowed Gandhi's plea and gave him opportunity to file another affidavit. The court posted the matter for hearing on May 6.”
During the hearing, the court questioned Rahul Gandhi over his 22-page affidavit filed on Monday, to express regret, saying it wasn’t enough. He had earlier submitted in the Supreme Court that he had attributed the 'chowkidar chor hai' remark to the apex court in the 'heat of election campaigning' and put the word regret in brackets.
Twitter users also called it a non-apology.
Arguing in the court in favour of Rahul Gandhi, Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the Congress chief never intended to suggest that Supreme Court endorsed, adopted or supported the political slogan ‘chowkidar chor hai’.
