Relatives of 22-year-old woman cry foul after doctor says there was no baby inside the womb

Patna: In a bizarre incident, a gynaecologist who conducted a Caesarean operation on a pregnant woman at a prestigious government hospital in the northern state of Bihar claims to have found no baby in the mother's womb, forcing the authorities to order an inquiry.
Kavita Devi, a 22-year-old woman from Budhi Gaon village in south Bihar's Gaya district, was on Tuesday evening hurriedly admitted to a government-run local Lady Elgin Hospital after she complained of severe labour pain. Finding her case serious, the doctors on duty conducted a Caesarean surgery.
The patient's family members were shocked when they were informed that the doctor who conducted the surgery did not find any baby inside the womb of the patient.
‘Unbelievable'
"This is simply unbelievable. The ultrasound tests that we conducted shortly before her being admitted to the hospital had found a healthy baby inside.
"How can the baby go missing?" Devi's father-in-law, Firangi Paswan, questioned on Wednesday. He alleged that the hospital authorities in league with the human traffickers might have sold it to a childless mother.
However, Dr Renu Singh, the gynaecologist who conducted the surgery, claimed that such instances are not rare.
"There have been instances where the patients' abdomens have grown owing to some deformities but without babies inside.
"The same could be the case here," she said.
