New Delhi/Bhopal: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025 commenced on Sunday across more than 5,453 centres in over 500 cities, with over 2.27 million candidates (22.7 lakh) appearing for the country’s premier medical entrance examination.

The high-stakes test is being conducted under unprecedented security measures, following last year’s controversy involving alleged paper leaks, inflated scores, and grace mark disputes.

Visuals from across India showed candidates arriving early at exam centres, which were guarded under tight security.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the exam, confirmed that comprehensive arrangements were made to ensure a smooth and transparent process.

“This is my second attempt. I couldn’t score well last time. I hope I can do better now,” said Rajkumar Prasad, a candidate from Bhopal.Gunjan Gulati, appearing for her first attempt, said, “I’ve prepared very well. I have 100% confidence I’ll clear the exam.”Anamika Kumari from Siliguri added, “Preparations are done. There’s some fear, but I’m ready.”

In response to the NEET-UG 2024 backlash, which drew judicial scrutiny and public protests, the NTA has implemented a three-tier surveillance system at the district, state, and centre levels.

Police forces are stationed at each exam venue, and question papers and OMR sheets are transported with armed protection to prevent tampering.

CCTV surveillance, biometric verification, and strict frisking procedures have been enforced at all centres. Coaching institutes and online activity are being monitored to counter any organised cheating networks.

Candidates have been warned that any attempt at cheating, impersonation, or the use of unfair means could result in cancellation of results and a three-year ban from future NTA-conducted exams. The NTA also urged students not to trust unverified sources claiming influence over results or admissions.

Most exam centres are located in government and aided institutions. With the exam scheduled for the afternoon and summer heat soaring, authorities have ensured the availability of drinking water, uninterrupted electricity, portable toilets, and emergency health services at all venues.

NEET UG 2025 determines admission to MBBS, BDS, and other undergraduate medical programmes in India. With over 2.27 million aspirants, this year's exam is among the largest ever held, and the authorities are aiming to restore trust and uphold the integrity of the selection process.
