Dubai: Investigations into the death of Dr Payal Tadvi, a Mumbai-based doctor, took another turn when her lawyer claimed that her death was a murder and not suicide, as earlier reported.
In court, the lawyer said that the post-mortem report showed a ligature mark on Dr Tadvi’s neck and claimed that there was suspicion of evidence tampering as the victim’s body was not brought to the hospital immediately by the accused senior doctors.
According to a news report by Indian news channel, NDTV, Nitin Satpute, the lawyer representing the family said: “From the circumstances of her death and bruise mark on her body, we can say that it must be a case of murder and not of suicide. Police must investigate this case in the lines of a murder investigation. Police should be given 14 days’ time for that.”
He added: “The accused had taken her body to some other place and later it was brought to the hospital, so there is a suspicion of tampering with the evidence.”
The case was heard at the Mumbai sessions court, where the prosecutor Jay Singh Desai also added that the witnesses were under pressure as the accused were senior doctors, according to the NDTV report.
The police are expected to hand over the investigation to Mumbai police’s crime branch, according to Indian newspaper Times of India.
The newspaper also reported that Dr Tadvi’s family had met Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, demanding that the case be fast-tracked and the guilty be given severe punishment.
