The case has resulted in four arrests so far, including that of the on-duty security guard
A law student from South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gang-raped inside the college guard room on the evening of June 25, according to a police complaint filed by the survivor at Kasba Police Station. The case has resulted in four arrests so far, including that of the on-duty security guard who allegedly vacated his post to enable the assault.
As reported by The Hindu, the survivor alleged that the main accused ordered two others to take her to the guard’s room, where she was confined and assaulted for over three hours — between 7.30 p.m. and 10.50 p.m. The survivor also claimed that the guard, Pinaki Banerjee, 55, not only failed to help but actively complied with the accused’s instructions.
“I packed my things and went outside to escape and saw that they had locked the main gate, and the guard was helpless and did not help… He instructed M and P to take me to the guard’s room and instructed the guard to sit outside. They did so,” the survivor’s complaint states, as cited by The Hindu (June 29 report).
Banerjee was arrested on Friday, and is currently being interrogated, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to four.
The other three accused include Monojit Mishra, 31 — a college staff member and ex-student said to be affiliated with the Trinamool Congress student wing — as well as current students Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20, and Zaib Ahmed, 19.
A preliminary medical report “does not rule out sexual assault,” according to the police, though further forensic analysis is underway.
The incident has sparked protests across Kolkata, with opposition parties condemning the state government’s handling of campus safety. Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee’s controversial remarks on the case have also drawn sharp criticism.
