Thiruvananthapuram: In horrid turn of events, a young man in Kerala lost his life in a bike accident unaware of the fact that his parents were ready to spring a surprise on him the following day with a new bike for his 21st birthday.
The parents, K Vijayan and Sathi, had purchased a new bike for their son Vishnu Vijayan and had kept it a secret so they could hand over the keys to him on Thursday, his 21st birthday.
Vishnu was known to have a liking for bikes.
Surprise turns to shock
Vijayan and Sathi who were eagerly waiting to spring a surprise on their son were in turn served with the shock of their lives, hearing of their son’s death in a bike mishap on Tuesday.
Vishnu Vijayan lost his life in a bike accident near Piravom, a town between Kottayam and Ernakulam on Tuesday.
He had been employed in a private company in Ernakulam, from where he was commuting home on bike when the accident occurred. Police suspect that he lost control of the bike while attempting to avoid a pothole on the road.
The seriously injured youth was rushed to a private hospital in Kochi, but could not be saved. His father works as a farm labourer and his mother works with a women’s self-help group. Vishnu Vijayan’s sister’s marriage was held only a few weeks ago.

Kerala’s annual road accident deaths have crossed 4,000 in recent years.
In 2019, 4,370 people were killed and 44,467 injured in 39,944 accidents in the state.
