New Delhi: The controversy around 17th-century monument Taj Mahal has only heated up in the past few weeks with political analysts describing it as an attempt by the central government to divert the attention of the people, particularly youth, from more pertinent issues such as failure of the mighty demonetisation scheme and shortcomings of the newly-launched Goods and Services Tax (GST).

“Indeed these are planned tactics by the government. Everyone knows that demonetisation is a big time flop and people from all parts of India are complaining of the failings of GST.

“That is why the controversy over the Taj Mahal was created by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders so that people’s attention can be taken away from these burning issues,” says Delhi-based political analyst Anup Saksena.

Ahead of Gujarat elections, the leaders of BJP started making controversial comments around Taj Mahal … Nobody is talking about Gujarat and the ground realities there. Honestly speaking, it is all drama.”

Another analyst Sankalp Saini from Mumbai feels the timing of the Gujarat elections and the Taj controversy is suspect.

“Ahead of Gujarat elections, the leaders of BJP started making controversial comments around Taj Mahal. Now everyone is talking about it. Some people have also begun to make comments against 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan. Nobody is talking about Gujarat and the ground realities there. Honestly speaking, it is all drama,” Saini told Gulf News.

Befooling people

Most people feel that the controversy around the Taj Mahal would die a natural death after Gujarat elections.

“This is nothing but the government’s strategy to change stance to appeal to people. BJP is shying away to discuss its failures. The party is at loss to explain why demonetisation failed and why the economy is constantly going down.

“I am confident the controversy around Taj will die a natural death after Gujarat elections. Taj and Tipu are just tactics to befool people,” says Delhi-based political analyst Anjan Mishra.
