Dubai: She had gone to fill a scholarship form, but did not return back home. The mutilated body of the 17-year-old girl was found 200 meters outside her village in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, yesterday. The shocking incident from the state’s Lakhimpur Kheri district is the second incident of rape and murder of a teenage girl, in this district, in the past 10 days.

According to the relatives of the deceased girl, she had left home on Monday to visit a neighbouring town, to fill up a scholarship form. However, when she did not return the family informed the police.

According to the local police, on Tuesday morning the body was recovered near a dried-up pond around 200 metres from her village. The police had initially said the girl appeared to have been killed with a sharp weapon, and that she had sustained injuries to her neck.

The grade 12 student's uncle told reporters: "I really do not know what to say or whom to suspect. She left around 8.30am on Monday. We do not suspect anyone.”

A police official said: "The post-mortem report has confirmed rape. We are making all possible efforts to identify and arrest the accused."

He added that police teams under the supervision of the additional superintendent have been formed to work out the case. He said investigating teams have collected some vital clues, and the killers will be arrested soon.

In a previous incident, a minor was raped and strangulated to death in Lakhimpur Kheri district. The 13-year-old girl’s body was recovered from a sugarcane field belonging to one of the accused, reports had said. The girl’s post mortem had confirmed rape, and two accused were arrested.
