Woman a restaurant worker was called to hotel room under pretense of a job offer
Kolkata: A senior citizen has been arrested for allegedly raping a Delhi-based woman at a south Kolkata hotel, police said on Monday.
According to the complaint, the woman, who is currently working in Kolkata at a bar-cum-restaurant, was called to the hotel room on March 7 under the pretense of a job offer. The accused, a resident of Bhawanipur, allegedly introduced himself as a businessman.
Upon her arrival, the accused reportedly raped her and threatened her with dire consequences if she spoke out. The woman remained in shock for a couple of days before gathering the courage to report the incident to the police.
Following her complaint, an FIR was registered, and the accused was arrested. He was presented before a city court on Monday and sent to police custody.
West Bengal has witnessed a surge in reported cases of rape and sexual violence over the past six months, including the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata last month.
