Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: A pension of Rs6,000 (Dh308) per annum will be disbursed to the women who have been given triple talaq, or instant divorce, in the state, government sources said on Saturday.

In the last quarter of the current financial year, the government is targeting the pension scheme, sources said with victims getting Rs500 per month.

Reacting to this, Shia religious leader Maulana Saif Abbas said: "The government should look more into the education of children and their stay, which will be better than giving Rs500 as pension to triple talaq victims."

Sunni religious leader Maulana Sufiana said: "Politics has been done on this issue. It is to be seen what justice the government wants to do by giving Rs500 per month pension."

An activist Shahista Ambar said: "The government's initiative is good but the amount is very low. It will be difficult to meet the basic needs with Rs6,000 annual pension."
