New Delhi: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who recently joined active politics, will concentrate on her new responsibility as Congress general secretary from eastern Uttar Pradesh, and not contest the upcoming national election, sources in the party have indicated.

“Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will focus on Congress party’s campaign and her role as the general secretary from eastern Uttar Pradesh. She needs time to focus on this new responsibility which is huge for a new entrant in politics,” the sources said.

For more than a decade before joining active politics, Priyanka helped her mother Sonia Gandhi and brother Rahul Gandhi in their constituencies Raebareli and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

“As of now, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will continue to help her mother and brother in their constituencies. She is not focussing on fighting this time as an MP herself. Besides, she has to work overtime to help several other key candidates of Congress in Uttar Pradesh. All this is going to take a lot of her time,” the sources added.

Since assuming the responsibility of Congress’s general secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka has been working hard to boost the party’s chances in the state.

She has been actively meeting ground-level party workers in order to create innovative strategies to attract voters in the state.

On Wednesday, she even met Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad at a Meerut hospital, a day after he was arrested for alleged violation of the model code of conduct. The Dalit leader was taken into custody when he was planning to take out a procession to Muzaffarnagar on motorbikes.

Azad had announced that in case Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) alliance failed to field a strong candidate against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, he would himself contest against him. Clearly, Priyanka’s meeting with Azad on Wednesday is an attempt to woo Dalits in the state.
