After three months of searching, police in India’s Mumbai city have managed to find a man who had eloped with his lover after telling his wife and family that he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

According to police, on June 24, the man named Manish Mishra, who used to work in Navi Mumbai, called his wife and told her that he had tested positive for the virus. He added that he would not survive and then switched off his phone.

That day he did not return home. When his family tried to call him, his mobile remained out of reach.

Worried, the next morning the family filed a missing person report at the local police station.

Talking to Indian news media outlets, the police department said that acting on the complaint, they formed a team to locate Mishra. They traced his phone and found the last location he was at, before switching his phone off.

“We sent a team to the spot, where we found his motorcycle and key, his backpack that he carried to work, and his helmet,” an officer said.

To ensure it wasn’t a suicide case, the policemen checked a nearby creek with the help of local fishermen, but could not find his body.

“We were certain that he was alive, so we kept looking,” the officer added.

The investigators then started scanning CCTV footage and forwarded his pictures to police departments of other states in India.

Finally, CCTV footage showed Mishra travelling in a car with a woman. Upon further inquiry, the team of cops learnt that Mishra had travelled to Madhya Pradesh and was staying in Indore with the woman.

The police official was quoted as saying: “We learnt that he was in an extramarital affair, he was staying in Indore with his girlfriend.”

Finally, this week, a team was sent to Indore, and they brought the man back to Navi Mumbai, the officer said.
