Hyderabad: At least 20 passengers including the driver, were injured when a multi model transport system local train hit a stationary express train in Hyderabad on Monday morning, police said.

The injured including the driver of the local train, some of them in critical conditions were rushed to two nearby hospitals.

The accident occurred near Kachiguda, one of the railway stations in Hyderabad city. After hitting the stationary express train, the engine of the local train was badly damaged and the driver got trapped inside. The rescue team of National Disaster Relief Force brought him out by cutting through the cabin using gas cutters. As the driver had fallen unconscious the medical team started giving him oxygen and saline even before he was brought out.

Six coaches of the local train were also derailed and badly damaged. Intercity Hundri Express coming from Kurnool to Kachiguda had stopped just outside the station waiting for signal when the local train hit it from behind.

The accident disrupted the MMTS service on Falaknuma-Lingampally route.

Railway officials said that the disaster could have been bigger if the speed of the local train was not slow. A probe was ordered into the causes of the accident. Assistant General Manager BB Singh said that prima facie the mishap was the result of the error on the part of the driver. “The probe will establish the cause”, he added.
