Posing as a Delhi cop with fake ID and toy gun, ex-accountant ran his act for two years
New Delhi, Aug 13 – In an unusual case of career reinvention gone wildly off track, a 36-year-old ex-accountant has been arrested in Delhi for impersonating a police sub-inspector using a fake uniform, forged ID cards, and a toy pistol.
The accused, Lakhpat Singh Negi, was picked up on Tuesday night by patrolling officers from Maurya Enclave police station after they noticed him behaving suspiciously in a Hyundai Exter parked in Pitampura. When questioned, Negi claimed to be a sub-inspector posted at the Cyber Cell in Dwarka — a story that quickly unravelled.
Police recovered a fake Delhi Police uniform, multiple forged ID cards, and a toy Hollister pistol from the car. According to DCP (Northwest) Bhisham Singh, Negi had been posing as an officer for nearly two years, allegedly to gain respect and financial benefits, after losing his previous job as an accountant. “He was ashamed of being unemployed and used the uniform to feel important,” said a police official. Negi now faces serious charges, including impersonation, forgery, and wearing a public servant's garb with fraudulent intent.
The case has sparked a mix of amusement and concern among locals, with police urging citizens always to verify the identity of individuals claiming to be law enforcement.
As for Negi, he’s gone from fake sub-inspector to real arrestee— proving once again that dressing the part doesn’t make it real, especially when your gun squeaks.
