Dubai: In a bizarre incident, a man reportedly severed four fingers of his left hand to render himself unfit for his role as a computer operator at his family's firm.

The man, identified as Mayur Tarapara, is said to have taken this extreme step to avoid working at his family's diamond business, Anabh Gems, located in Varachha Mini Bazaar, Surat, PTI reported, citing Gujarat police.

Initially, the 32-year-old claimed he had lost his fingers after falling unconscious by the roadside. He told police that, while riding his motorcycle on Amroli Ring Road on December 8, he had fainted and, upon regaining consciousness, discovered his fingers had been severed

However, technical surveillance, CCTV footage, and other evidence pointed to Tarapara's involvement. Police revealed that Tarapara confessed to purchasing a knife days earlier and using it to cut off his fingers at around 10 pm on December 8. He tied a rope near his elbow to stem blood flow before discarding the knife and fingers in separate bags.

Three of the severed fingers were later recovered from a bag, while the knife was found in another. Tarapara was taken to the hospital by friends after the incident.

The Crime Branch's statement indicated that Tarapara took this drastic measure because he lacked the courage to inform his family that he did not wish to continue working at the firm. His role as a computer operator in the accounts department relied heavily on his ability to type, making him unfit for the job following the loss of his fingers.

A case has been registered at Amroli police station, and the investigation is ongoing.
