Indians are known to love big fat weddings, however, amid a COVID-19 lockdown in the Indian city of Mumbai, a young couple decided to get married without any fanfare on Thursday, April 10. They adhered to the rules by wearing masks and maintaining the guidelines of social distancing.
Many people on Twitter shared the news report of how the lockdown did not deter Mumbai-based property dealer Ramkishan Chavan from marrying his girlfriend Reema Singh. The wedding took place at a temple in the western suburb of Kandivali without any finery or fanfare.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency, the ceremony was conducted in the absence of family and friends, who could not attend the wedding due to the the lockdown.
The report added that although the lockdown quashed their plans for a big fat Indian wedding, the couple didn't wish to postpone the event, since rumours of the curfew being extended were doing rounds.
"We have been in a relationship for the last five years and decided to tie the knot this month," the couple said.
"We contacted a local social worker, who helped us prepare an affidavit. We got married at a temple, wearing masks, in keeping with the guidelines of social distancing," the couple were quoted as saying, in the report.
