Dubai: A child in India drank insecticide to combat his hunger, triggering an investigation by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

The incident took place on December 31, in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district.

The child resorted to drinking the hazardous liquid when the local ration shop refused to give him wheat, even upon repeated requests, as reported by India Today, an English-language news magazine and television channel. The age of the child has not been revealed.

According to Indian newspaper, Hindustan Times, the child is in a critical condition and a report by the NCPCR is yet to be filed.

The Global Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index had ranked Madhya Pradesh the fourth poorest state in India in 2018. Severe hunger and malnutrition are amongst the issues that affect the low income groups and underprivileged children living in the Congress-led state.
