Thiruvananthapuram: A Kerala schoolboy who tried to take a selfie while standing on top of a train has paid for the adventure with his life.
The 14-year-old boy, identified as Shihabuddin, son of Kaipramvalappil Moitheen and Pathumma of Kizhakke Chathannur from near Thrissur, had attempted to capture a selfie standing on top of a train last Tuesday, unaware of a high voltage power line passing above his head.
The incident happened at Shoranur railway station.
When the teenager climbed on top of a freight train for the selfie, he accidently came into contact with the power line and was thrown off the locomotive.
He sustained serious burns as well as other injuries from the fall. His clothes were also partially burnt.
He was first rushed in critical condition to a private hospital in Thrissur and then to the Thrissur Medical College.
While Shiabuddin had shown some improvement over the week, and had begun speaking after a few days, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
He had two sisters.
Because the family could not afford the medical expenses, well-wishers were chipping in to foot the hospital costs.
Meanwhile, there was a tragedy at a school in Kottayam district when two teenage girls consumed poison and one of them lost her life.
The incident took place in Kanjirapally and the deceased girl was identified as Vindhya (17), daughter of V.K. Rajeev. Her friend who consumed poison is in critical condition.
The two had not turned up at school on Monday and the school authorities had informed their parents.
The parents and police were searching for the girls when they were found lying unconscious by a roadside.
They were rushed to the local hospital.
