Patna: A village court in Bihar has put a blanket ban on the hiring of music DJs during social functions saying the measure will check sound pollution. The court also announced a fine of Rs5,000 (Dh260) for violations.

The decision was taken by the residents of Labha village which falls under Pranpur block in Katihar, an eastern Bihar district some 350km from Patna. The village is home to some 4,000 population.

Local villagers took this decision after finding that the DJ was putting the lives of several of their colleagues at risk due to loud music. As per the report, many village elders have heart-related ailments and loud music makes things worse.

Recently, four DJs were hired for four wedding functions organised on a single day at the village, causing much sound pollution there. The overall situation got so worse that one of the villagers suffering from heart problems had to be moved to a neighbouring village.

Subsequently, the issue of hiring DJ at the social functions was brought to the notice of the local village court. The court after seriously considering the requests of the local residents later put a blanket on hiring of DJ at the village.

“We have banned DJ at the village to check sound pollution. Anyone violating the order will have to cough [up] Rs5,000 as fine,” a village official, Mohammad Jehangir, told the media on Monday. He said a formal notice to this effect has been circulated among the villagers.

The local village council chief hailed the ban order and asked the neighbouring villages to take inspiration from this. “This is very lovely initiative of the villagers which deserves much praise,” local village council chief Saud Alam told the media on Monday.
