Patna: A couple in India got married in an evening ceremony attended by family and friends - and then got divorced the very next day.

Farooq Ahmad, a resident of Buxur district in Bihar, had led a wedding procession to the house of Nazia Khatoon in neighbouring Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh state on Sunday evening. They had only seen photographs of each other but had not met as the wedding was arranged by their parents.

Guests received a warm welcome by the family of the bride on their arrival and the wedding was solemnised by the Qazi at night.

However, members of the bride’s family noticed Ahmad's right hand was not working. On inquiry it was found that he had suffered paralytic attacks and his right limbs were not working properly.

Refused to accept

The news reached the bride who refused to accept the marriage. The next day, both were called to the police station for a meeting where it was decided that the bride would be allowed to leave the groom since his family had kept hers in the dark about his disability.

“The matter reached before the police and we settled the issue through their consent,” a police official with Kasimabad police station Shyamji Yadav said.

Bihar has reported more than 50 cases in which brides have rejected the 'unsuitable' grooms at wedding venues for various reasons.
