Space provides a calm, controlled environment for neurodivergent travellers
Bengaluru: In a groundbreaking initiative, Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (KIA) has introduced India’s first-ever sensory room to support passengers with autism, anxiety, and sensory sensitivities.
Strategically located near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2, this thoughtfully designed space provides a calm, controlled environment for neurodivergent travelers, helping them feel at ease before their journey.
Airports can be overwhelming, with bright lights, constant announcements, security screenings, and bustling crowds — factors that can be particularly distressing for individuals with:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)
Anxiety Disorders
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Other mental health conditions
Recognizing these challenges, Bengaluru Airport’s sensory room is designed to create a peaceful and stress-free travel experience.
Hari Marar, MD & CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), emphasized the airport’s commitment to accessibility:
"We are dedicated to building an inclusive and passenger-friendly airport. From our biophilic, sustainable Terminal 2 to cutting-edge digital solutions, Bengaluru Airport has consistently pioneered innovations. The sensory room aligns with our mission to ensure inclusivity is not just a feature but a core value for us."
Developed in collaboration with Incluzza, a leader in disability inclusion, the sensory room is grounded in behavioral science and occupational therapy research. Studies show that spending just 15-30 minutes in a sensory-friendly environment can significantly reduce stress and improve overall well-being, making travel smoother for neurodivergent passengers.
Dipesh Sutariya, Chairman & MD of EnAble India Group, lauded BIAL’s commitment: "The Sensory Room is one of several initiatives BIAL has undertaken to ensure every passenger enjoys a positive travel experience. It’s inspiring to see accessibility being driven by thoughtful, proactive action. We hope this is just the beginning of more such initiatives across India."
This multi-sensory haven includes:
Ambient lighting – A bubble tube, galaxy projector, and LED cubes for personalized sensory input
Interactive elements – Floor and wall projections, a ball pool, and a sensory toy station for cognitive engagement
Relaxation aids – Crash pads, weighted blankets, and therapy mats to support emotional regulation
Visual and tactile features – Optical curtains, infinity mirrors, and tactile wall panels for sensory exploration
Soothing auditory elements – A white noise machine and calming sound system to maintain a peaceful atmosphere
Additional stress-relief tools – A balance board, lava lamp, and aroma diffuser for enhanced relaxation
By integrating visual, auditory, tactile, and movement-based stimulation, the sensory room offers a sanctuary of comfort for passengers with sensory sensitivities. This initiative sets a new benchmark in inclusive air travel, ensuring every traveler — regardless of their needs — has a smooth and stress-free journey.
Bengaluru Airport’s pioneering step redefines accessibility in Indian aviation, setting an example for other airports across the country.
