A mother in Telangana is growing the world’s most expensive mango
In the quiet Indian village of Bhosi in Telangana’s Bhokar taluka, something remarkable is growing — not just on trees, but in the minds of farmers inspired by the journey of Sumanbai Gaikwad, Indian media reported.
Once an ordinary farmer tending to her land, Sumanbai now finds herself at the heart of a quiet revolution, thanks to a pandemic-era gift from her son, Nandkishore Gaikwad. While studying online, he stumbled across an article on the Miyazaki mango, a Japanese variety known for its bright red colour, rich nutrition, and jaw-dropping price — up to 10,000 rupees (Dh 425) per piece.
Intrigued by its global reputation and market value, Nandkishore ordered 10 saplings from the Philippines at 6,500 rupees each and gave them to his mother, who planted them.
Two years later, this season, each tree has borne around a dozen mangoes. Nandkishore consulted Warpudkar, a successful farmer from Parbhani who had pioneered Miyazaki cultivation in Maharashtra, and they agreed on a price of ₹10,000 per mango.
Today, Sumanbai’s orchard isn’t just bearing fruit — it’s planting seeds of change. Local farmers are now exploring Miyazaki cultivation, inspired by what one woman and her son could achieve through trust, research, and vision.
