Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh state assembly was adjourned for second consecutive day on Saturday without any business as Telangana Rashtra Samiti stalled the proceedings on the issue of withdrawal of cases against the students who participated in Telangana state movement.
Determined TRS members refused to budge from their position that they will allow the House to function only after the state government makes a statement on the issue. After adjourning the House briefly three times, deputy speaker D. Manohar called it a day when his efforts to restore order failed.
TRS members, who were involved in a midnight drama outside Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy's residence, were up on their feet right from the morning demanding a statement.
TRS flood leader E. Rajinder said that the home minister had assured them on Friday night that a statement will be made in the House. "It is unfortunate that after making the promise she did not turn up in the House today," he said.
He warned that the TRS will continue its protest even tomorrow if the government did not relent.
However, with no clear assurance coming from the government, TRS members rushed to the Speaker's podium and the assembly echoed with the slogans of supporting Telangana.
Another TRS member T. Harish Rao wondered why the government was hesitant to withdraw the cases against Telangana students when the governments in the past had withdrawn cases booked against people involved in violence after the assassination of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and the death of Vangaveeti Mohan Ranga in Vijaywada. The assembly was adjourned on the first day of the session yesterday due to similar protests.
