Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, YSR Congress party chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy and Jana Sena party president Pawan Kalyan were among the large number of candidates who filed their nomination papers for Andhra Pradesh assembly elections on Friday.

With the pundits declaring the day to be auspicious most of the candidates chose Friday to file their papers, just two days before the process comes to an end.

While Chandrababu Naidu filed his nomination from Kuppam in Chittoor district his son and a state minister Nara Lokesh filed his papers from Mangalgiri assembly constituency in the state capital region of Amaravati.

Jaganmohan Reddy, who is seeking a second term from the family pocket borough of Pulivendual in Kadapa went to file his nomination in a big procession. In a reflection of his continuing popularity, a massive gathering was witnessed on the occasion.

Filmstar-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan filed his nomination papers from Gauwaka assembly constituency in Visakhapatnam district.

With rival candidates taking out processions with their supporters, tension prevailed at many places. In Undi constituency of West Godavari district, police had to use batons to keep the situation under control as the supporters of TDP and YSRCP clashed. The incident occurred when the candidates of both the parties reached the Tehsildar’s office to file nominations at the same time.

Simultaneous elections to the 175 seats state assembly and 25 Lok Sabha states in Andhra Pradesh were slated for April 11 while the votes will be counted on May 23.
