Hyderabad: At least two construction workers were killed and seven others were seriously injured when an building under construction collapsed in the Jubilee Hills area of Hyderabad on Sunday.

The building had been under construction for the last two months near the Cultural Club of Film Nagar colony where many Telugu film celebrities reside.

The building collapsed when a slab was being laid over 10 pillars. As the news of the collapse spread a large number of local people rushed to the scene and started rescue work even before the emergency squad of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the Fire Brigade and the police reached the spot.

Heavy machines were deployed to remove the debris and rescue the workers. The two deceased workers were identified as Anand and Ansar Shaikh, both from West Bengal.

Hyderabad Mayor B Rammohan also visited the scene and oversaw search-and-rescue operations. GHMC assistant commissioner of police Shekhar Reddy said that the building was being constructed without permission.

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh chief ministers K. Chandrasekhar Rao and N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the incident. Rao directed officials to provide free medical treatment to the injured.
