Lucknow: At least 15 people are feared drowned after a boat capsized in a river in northern India.
Police official Daya Pal Singh told how a boat, carrying about 25 people, capsized in the Ram Ganga river on Tuesday. Singh says rescue workers have recovered six bodies and are searching for others.
He said that 10 passengers managed to swim to safety.
The accident took place in Moradabad. The town is about 300 kilometres southwest of Lucknow, the state capital of Uttar Pradesh.
Boat accidents are common in India as boats are generally old and in bad repair. What’s more, lifejackets are seldom used.
