Al Ain: The process of climate change can be slowed down by individuals who are aware of environmental challenges and ready to play their role actively.

Scientists and experts suggest different methods for individuals to contribute their share in the global fight against climate change, Fatima Al Sa'adi, an Emirati environmentalist, said.

"I believe each and every individual can do a lot by adopting practices that can reduce their monthly utility bills," she said.

Saving energy and reducing garbage are two simple measures.

Energy generation is a major source of carbon dioxide gas emission in the atmosphere. Similarly, less garbage means less emission of greenhouse gases.

"I advise people to change conventional bulbs in their homes with energy-efficient fluorescent lights," she said.

Household appliances also consume a major chunk of electricity supply. People should buy appliances that are clearly marked as energy-efficient.

Al Sa'adi said transportation is a major source of pollution in cities as they emit carbon dioxide and other burnt and unburnt hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.

Switching to public transport and cutting out unnecessary driving can also help the nation cut down its greenhouse gas emissions.

"I really appreciate Dubai's initiative to encourage people to reduce their dependence on private cars and buses with an efficient mass transit rail system," she said.

People should also be encouraged to make at least one day a week car-free.

Other practices which can make a difference include water conservation, using alternate energy such as solar power, planting trees in villas, quitting smoking and traditional shisha, and modifying their homes to conserve heat and cold according to seasonal requirements.

"Just maintain proper air pressure in your car's tyres as under-inflation reduces fuel economy, causing more emission of CO2 and other gases in the air," Mohammad Afaq, a meteorologist, said.
