Penalties explained ahead of Gulf Traffic Week under the theme Driving without a Phone
Sharjah: Using a mobile phone behind the wheel remains one of the most common—and dangerous—forms of distracted driving. It can result in sudden lane changes, running red lights, rear-end collisions, or even driving well below the speed limit on highways. Just a split second of distraction can put lives at serious risk.
Despite ongoing awareness campaigns and repeated warnings, many drivers in the UAE continue to use their phones to text, take calls, or scroll through social media while driving.
In 2024 alone, the Ministry of Interior recorded a staggering 648,631 violations for mobile phone use while driving—a worrying statistic that highlights how widespread this risky behaviour remains across the country. (See emirate-wise breakdown below.)
These figures have been released ahead of Unified Gulf Traffic Week, which begins Monday under the theme ‘Driving without a Phone’.
Reckless drivers are identified either directly by traffic patrols or through advanced smart monitoring systems now implemented across the UAE.
Authorities urge motorists to refrain from any phone use while driving—including browsing, taking photos, or recording videos—as these activities significantly increase the likelihood of accidents.
Fine, black points, and vehicle impoundment
To promote road safety, UAE authorities have implemented strict penalties. Any motorist caught using a mobile phone while driving—whether for texting, calling, or checking apps—faces a Dh800 fine and four black points on their driving licence.
Additionally, in October 2024, Dubai Police introduced a new law that enforces a 30-day vehicle impoundment along with the existing Dh800 fine and black points, for drivers distracted by mobile devices.
Authorities continue to emphasise the key safety message: Put the phone down and focus on the road. Distracted driving not only endangers the driver's life, but also risks the safety of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.
