Five-lane bridges handle 7,500 vehicles/hour and include pedestrian/cycle paths
Abu Dhabi: The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), in collaboration with the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), has opened two new bridges connecting Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street towards Musaffah.
The Dh315 million infrastructure project will greatly improve traffic flow, cutting peak morning hour delays at the intersection by up to 80%. Each bridge has five lanes, with a capacity to handle 7,500 vehicles per hour, and includes dedicated paths for cyclists and pedestrians.
The project includes a three-lane flyover on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and a two-lane bridge connecting Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street to Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street.
The new bridges span 742 meters with five lanes and 61 streetlights. The 990-meter ramps are supported by 12 piers.
Bridges and Lanes: The project includes a three-lane flyover on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and a two-lane bridge linking Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street to Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street.
Capacity and Traffic Flow: Designed to accommodate 7,500 vehicles per hour and reduce morning peak-hour delays by up to 80%.
Cycle and Pedestrian Paths: The upgrades feature dedicated cycle lanes and pedestrian paths to promote sustainable transportation.
Landscaping and Roads: Service roads have been improved, and landscaping has been upgraded across 46,000m² of street area.
Construction involved upgrading 46,000m² of street landscaping and using 15,354m³ of concrete. The project was completed with over 3 million safe man-hours and zero lost time incidents (LTI).
The project will benefit commuters traveling to Zayed International Airport, Musaffah, and Hudayriyat Island.

“This new infrastructure, completed on time and within budget, marks the beginning of a transformative year for Abu Dhabi in 2025. We will continue working with stakeholders to deliver smart, sustainable infrastructure to meet the growing demands of our population,” Al Shorafa added.
The upgraded intersection is expected to reduce peak morning hour delays to just 20 seconds. The project also includes provisions for future developments, including plans for an underpass.
