Launch of the passenger service is expected to revolutionise travel across the UAE
Abu Dubai: The developer and operator of UAE’s national railway network, Etihad Rail, has confirmed launch dates for the much-anticipated passenger train service. Etihad Rail said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the line will start operations in 2026.
Etihad Rail said it briefed Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region, on the latest progress of the UAE National Railway Network.
A delegation from Etihad Rail, led by CEO Shadi Malak, was received by Sheikh Hamdan at Al Dhanna Palace. During the meeting, the Etihad Rail team provided a comprehensive update on the ongoing developments of the national railway network, with a particular focus on the upcoming passenger train service, the post explained.
Etihad Rail’s X post read, “The project stands as one of the country’s largest strategic transportation projects, reflecting His Highness’s ongoing commitment to monitoring national projects and his continued support for infrastructure development initiatives across the UAE.”
The launch of the Etihad Rail passenger service in 2026 is expected to revolutionise travel across the UAE, offering a fast, efficient, and sustainable mode of transportation connecting major urban centres and regions.
Etihad Rail was established under Federal Law No. 2 to manage the development, construction and operation of the UAE’s national freight and passenger railway network.
In January, Etihad Rail unveiled details about a new high-speed train project linking Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The high-speed train will enable individuals to travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in just 30 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 350 km/h. The route will pass through key strategic destinations and tourist attractions, ensuring seamless travel for passengers and visitors.
“The project will enable seamless connectivity between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, significantly reducing travel times. It will also enhance the quality of life for citizens, residents and visitors while strengthening socioeconomic ties between the two emirates,” Etihad Rail said earlier this year.
The high-speed train is expected to contribute Dh145 billion to the UAE’s GDP over the next five decades.
Officials also said that the development of the high-speed train project has progressed with the issuance of tenders for project contracts and the approval of network designs. Following these key achievements, subsequent phases of the project will be developed in the coming years, paving the way for its final completion.
