Police highlight dangers of jaywalking in road safety awareness video
Abu Dhabi: Motorists and pedestrians in Abu Dhabi have been warned about unsafe road behaviour, particularly the high-risk practice of crossing streets from undesignated areas.
The advisory from Abu Dhabi Police coincides with the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, which the emirate is marking with an awareness campaign themed “Safe Walking and Cycling.” The initiative aims to promote responsible road habits and strengthen community-wide safety standards.
As part of the campaign, police released a video illustrating the dangers of jaywalking and unsafe pedestrian behaviour. The footage features real-life incidents and highlights how a brief lapse in judgment can result in serious or even fatal accidents.
Brigadier General Mahmoud Yousef Al Balushi, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, emphasized that pedestrian and cyclist safety is a strategic priority.
“Ensuring road safety starts with everyone,” he said.
“We urge pedestrians to use designated crossings — such as bridges, tunnels, and signal-controlled walkways — and to avoid random street crossings or distractions like using mobile phones while walking.”
Al Balushi also called on drivers to stay alert, especially near schools and residential areas, and to respect pedestrians’ right of way.
“A driver’s awareness and willingness to yield reflect their level of civic responsibility,” he added.
The campaign, which includes both field operations and digital outreach, leverages modern technology to deliver targeted traffic safety messages across social media and other platforms.
Abu Dhabi Police also reminded the public that jaywalking carries legal penalties. According to Article 89 of the Federal Traffic Law, pedestrians can be fined Dh400 for crossing roads from non-designated areas or ignoring traffic signals.
