Fujairah: A toddler found abandoned in Fujairah on Monday morning is in good health but the whereabouts of her immediate family are still unclear.

Doctors estimate the infant is between 12 and 18 months old and said they had found her to be completely healthy after conducting necessary medical checks.

The baby was found by a male Emirati passerby in the early hours of Monday in the Merasheed area of Fujairah.

After finding a bag filled with things meant for the baby, the man informed the police, who immediately took the child to Fujairah Hospital.

The plight of the child has raised much sympathy among staff at the hospital who are baffled as to what could bring anyone to abandon a child.

Questions are being raised about why and how a carer could abandon a child after bringing it up for some time since it is normally newly-born infants who face such a plight when the mother has not yet formed a strong relationship with the child.

The yet unnamed child has been kept at the paediatric ward of Fujairah Hospital under police guardianship until relatives come forward or can be found.

Police were not available for comment in the case.
