Six-metre shark caught in RAK

Last updated:

A fisherman yesterday caught a six-metre shark, locally known as Aqran, in Shaam. UAE national fisherman Saleh Ibrahim Al Hamrouni had left his fishing net in the water for a few days.

When he returned he found the shark trapped.

He said: "The shark was dead when it was pulled out of the water. It was so big that other fishermen had to help me for an hour to take it out of the water. It weighed more than 400kg."

The shark was loaded on to a wooden boat which was tugged to the Al Muaireed Fish Market. It was sold to a Dubai trader for Dh3,000 to be exported to countries such as China or Japan where demand is high.

Al Hamrouni said it was the first shark of its kind to be caught and the first shark to be caught in Ras Al Khaimah in the last 10 years.

Hundreds had gathered at the market to see the shark and many congratulated Al Hamrouni.
