The Marriage Fund is considering adapting Malaysian social programmes to assist young couples starting a family under difficult socio-economic conditions.

During a visit by Malaysian Minister of National Unity and Social Development Zahrah bint Sulieman, talks were held on social issues and it was agreed to exchange experiences.

Marriage Fund Director Jamal Al Bah said, "It is possible to adapt the social projects for young couples that have been conducted in Malaysia because the two countries stand on the same religious foundation."

The situation is slightly different in Malaysia where young couples need help to secure a job, a house and other financing. "Here, nationals can find jobs, but marriage expenses are very high and that is where we help them."

Al Bah said the Malaysian experience in providing counselling for young people before marriage and throughout their lives whenever it was needed to save a family has also been successful.

"The Marriage Fund has started a social counselling programme. It has also held seminars at women's associations and made some home visits. But these services can be improved.

"There will be more official visits. A UAE delegation will also visit Malaysia to see how the programmes are implemented, to be able to pick up the system and modify it to suit our communities and traditions."
