The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), Oman Chapter, has been set up in the Sultanate under the sponsorship of Oman Air and officially recognised by the parent body, the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), Florida, U.S.

The sponsorship of the institute is in line with Oman Air's goal of promoting high professional standards in the public and private sectors.

In this regard, the Internal Audit Department of Oman Air has been serving as the exam centre for Certified Internal Audit Examinations since 2000, which are administered by the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Established in 1941, the parent IIA serves nearly 85,000 members in internal auditing, governance and internal control, IT audit and education.

IIA is the world's leader in certification, education, research, and technological guidance for the profession of Internal Audit.

The institute serves as the profession's supervisory body and resource on significant auditing issues around the globe.

The main goal behind establishing the IIA chapter in Oman is to create awareness of best auditing practices in the internal audit profession and to promote it as a profession in the country.

The chapter will provide immense benefits to internal audit practitioners, executive management, board members, and the government bodies with regard to standards, guidance and other information.

"We aim to be the focal point for the internal audit profession in the Sultanate of Oman," said Mohammed al Musafir, president of the IIA Oman Chapter.

With the recent introduction of the Code of Corporate Governance for MSM-listed companies, internal auditors are expected to play a more challenging role in listed companies.

The Chapter will not only help them meet their responsibilities, but will also encourage the development of a pool of internal auditors to fulfil the requirement of the private and public sectors.

The Chapter will be administered and run by a Board of Governors and will implement the IIA by-laws.

The elected board includes Mohammed al Musafir (President), Abdul Rahman Ahmed al Harthy (Vice-President), Juma Rashid al Jahwari (Governor), Mohammed Salah-udin (Governor), Tahir Mahmood (Treasurer) and Anial Khabori (Secretary).

In addition, the following are members of the IIA Oman Chapter: Ravi Bhatt, Rizwan Patel, Abraham Varkey, Abdul Majeed Piroh Al Balushi, Amal Mohammed Al Balushi, Said Mohammed Al Jabri, Aisha Zahir Al Mawaly, Allaudin Ali Al Khatib, S. Ramamoorthy, Juma Rashid Al Jahwari and Osama Abduraheem Al Margali.
