AL AIN: The Universal Hospital Al Ain held a grand Baby Birthday Celebration on February 2 for all the babies born there in 2017.

Out of the 1,150 babies born last year, more than 500 turned up with their families for the event.

The occasion also saw the launch of two campaigns to raise awareness about bedwetting and oto-acoustic emissions (OAE) screening for early detection of inner ear abnormalities and hearing disability.

All rounded care

Dr. Shabeer Nellikode, founder and managing director of Universal Hospitals Group, expressed happiness at the success of the event. He said that even after the babies left their care, the hospital had an obligation to ensure their healthy development.

The bedwetting campaign was launched by Dr. Ibrahim Moustafa, consultant paediatrician and head of the Department of Paediatrics. “Successful treatment of bedwetting improves auditory working memory, quality of life and reduces psychological problems,” he said.

Hearing issues

ENT specialist Dr. Amal Kamal Eldin, who launched the OAE screening campaign, said it would help parents ensure that their newborns have no hearing problems.

“Parents often tend to neglect the issue due to lack of awareness,” she said, urging parents to understake oto-acoustic emissions (OAE) screening.

A large canvas was set up on the occasion to collect babies’ foot- and handprints. This was later installed at the Paediatric Outpatient Ward.
