Dubai: Fat busters who participated in the Your Weight in Gold campaign are set to receive a total of 16 kilograms of gold – worth an approximate Dh2.6 million, it was announced yesterday.

More than 10,000 residents participated in the 30-day programme, which was launched by Dubai Municipality from July 19 to August 16.

“The one-month-long health awareness campaign has become a global media spotlight as it has been discussed in over 198 countries and more than 100 languages, boosting the fame of Dubai, the city that lives in the future, to new unexpected horizons,’ said Eng Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality.

The name of the top three winners and the date of the honouring ceremony will be announced after Eid, and organisers also said that special categories will be announced, such as the winners among different genders and age groups.

“The initiative is considered the first in its kind in the world in terms of its unique attributes such as offering gold for all participants who reduced a minimum two kilograms and attractive prizes for top winners,” said Lootah.

He also pointed out that Dubai is constantly searching for innovative methods in keeping residents healthy.

Participants had to lose a minimum of two kilograms in weight to gain one gram for every kilo of weight lost. Those who lost five kilograms and above were eligible to get two grams of gold for each kilo, and three grams of gold for every kilogram for those who lost 10 kilograms and above.

“We received a large response from the public, and more than 10,000 people registered in the initiative, breaking the expectations regardless of the hot season confirming the health awareness in Dubai and people’s zest for such attractive drives,” said Eng. Mohammad Al Noori, director of Corporate Marketing and Relations Department at Dubai Municipality.

“The attractive schemes and prizes must have pushed the public to join, but one thing is absolutely sure that majority of the participants were waiting for a real push that can totally change them to a healthy new life,” he added.
