Dubai: The UAE has launched ECZPLORE, a pioneering national campaign designed to raise awareness, educate families, and improve care for children suffering from eczema, an inflammatory skin condition affecting many children in the country.

The initiative is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Emirates Dermatology Society (EDS), the nation’s premier dermatological authority, and Jamjoom Pharma, a leading healthcare company. Together, they seek to bring this often-underestimated health challenge out of the shadows and provide meaningful support to affected families.

The campaign will also include efforts to address fungal skin infections, a frequently overlooked concern in the region’s dermatological landscape.

This partnership reflects a new model of healthcare collaboration: Jamjoom Pharma provides the necessary funding and logistical support, while the Emirates Dermatology Society lends its medical expertise and community credibility.

Eczema’s hidden toll

Eczema, also known medically as a topic dermatitis, is a chronic condition characterised by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. In the UAE, over 20% of children are diagnosed with the condition, and more than 15% experience moderate to severe symptoms. For these children and their families, eczema is far more than a minor skin issue; it disrupts sleep, causes intense discomfort, and leads to emotional stress for both patients and caregivers.

Dr Ayman Al Naeem, President of the Emirates Dermatology Society, stresses the broader impact of eczema. “Eczema is not just about dry skin, it is about children missing school, parents losing sleep, and families battling stress in silence,” he added.

Improving care

Despite its prevalence, eczema remains poorly understood by the public. Many perceive it simply as a temporary rash, which leads to under-treatment and worsening symptoms. This gap in knowledge has contributed to a high number of uncontrolled moderate-to-severe cases in the UAE and neighbouring countries.

“Many people think eczema is just a rash that will go away, but for families, it is a daily battle that impacts mental health, quality of life, and relationships,” explains Samer Lezzaiq, General Manager for Gulf, Levant, and Export Markets at Jamjoom Pharma.

The campaign

The ECZPLORE campaign seeks to correct these misconceptions by providing accessible education and resources. Over the next 12 months, the campaign will deploy a comprehensive approach combining digital outreach, school programs, and healthcare professional training. The program aims to reach over one million people, including children, parents, educators, and medical providers.

Turning point

Dr Fatima Alberiki, Head of the Scientific Committee at the Emirates Dermatology Society, highlighted the initiative’s significance. “ECZPLORE represents a turning point in our fight against eczema in the UAE. This comprehensive initiative combines medical expertise with industry resources to reach over one million individuals. We’re glad to be partnering with Jamjoom Pharma on this impactful journey, as we work together to raise awareness, improve care, and support those affected by eczema across the country,” she added.

A community-based approach

Beyond raising awareness, ECZPLORE will offer tailored educational materials designed for children and families and develop professional training modules for dermatologists and primary care providers to improve diagnosis and treatment.
