Sharjah: In a groundbreaking achievement, the paediatric surgery team at Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Sharjah, part of Emirates Health Services, has successfully performed a pioneering lung lobectomy on a newborn weighing just 4 kilograms.

The infant had been suffering from congenital lung defects that hindered proper breathing. The team performed a precise, minimally invasive surgery to remove the lower lobe of the left lung, avoiding the need for a full thoracotomy. This marks a significant step forward in paediatric surgery techniques.

Four-hour procedure

Dr Khalid Khalfan, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon and Assistant Director for Medical Affairs at Al Qassimi Hospital, shared that the four-hour procedure was a complete success. The infant was discharged in excellent health just three days after the operation.

Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Hassan, Pediatric Surgery Consultant, explained that the newborn had congenital cystic lung lesions that severely affected his breathing. After thorough evaluation and diagnostic tests, the medical team decided to remove the damaged lung lobe through an advanced paediatric surgical scope. The procedure was carried out using four small incisions, each no larger than 2cm.
