Public to join survivors in walk at American University of Sharjah on January 25–26
Sharjah: Relay for Life (RFL) returns on January 25–26 at the American University of Sharjah to raise funds for cancer patients.
Organised by Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) in partnership with the American Cancer Society, the event runs under the theme ‘Worth Living’ and aims to honour cancer survivors, raise awareness, and support patients and their families through community engagement and fundraising.
Launched in the United States in 1985, RFL has grown into a global initiative. It debuted in the Middle East in 2017 under the patronage of FOCP Founder Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah the Ruler of Sharjah.
Aisha Al Mulla, director of FOCP, said: “RFL is a powerful embodiment of FOCP’s mission to provide comprehensive support to cancer patients and their families, easing financial and emotional burdens while raising awareness across all sectors of society. It reinforces solidarity—both communal and institutional—towards the cause of cancer patients.”
She added that since its launch in 2017, RFL has celebrated the resilience of over 500 cancer survivors and engaged more than 10,000 participants, including 1,500 dedicated volunteers. “This year, we remain committed to expanding our sustainable support network, ensuring hope remains high for patients and their families.”
Registration is free and open to all via joinrfl.focp.ae. Funds raised will support treatment journeys, moral support programmes, and early detection initiatives. Donations are accepted year-round through FOCP’s official website at focp.ae/donate.
The event includes awareness sessions, speeches, entertainment, and activities for families and children. A designated walking track promotes the importance of physical activity, and the Relay Luminaria ceremony honouring lives impacted by cancer, offering participants a opportunity to dedicate Luminaria (small paper lantern) to loved ones lost, those battling the disease, and survivors.
The event welcomes participants from all sectors, including cancer survivors, caregivers, government institutions, private companies, schools, universities, health professionals, and social media influencers, with opportunities to join the event or contribute through direct donations.
