Dubai: After a month of Ramadan fasting, which affects the body’s metabolism, hydration levels, and nutritional balance, it’s essential to reset the body to maintain long-term health, according to medical experts.

Dr. Shyam Rajamohan, Specialist in Internal Medicine at Prime Hospital, Dubai, noted that during Ramadan, a fasting individual’s body naturally shifts into detox mode.

“When you fast, your metabolism switches to burning stored fat for energy, helping with weight loss and flushing out unwanted toxins. This process boosts cell repair and improves digestion.”

However, he noted that as Ramadan comes to an end, it’s important to help your body adjust back to a regular eating routine to maintain your health and energy levels.

“During the month of fasting, your body gets used to eating less food at irregular times, making it a little difficult to get back to normal post-Ramadan. So, it is important to gradually increase your food intake after Ramadan,” Dr. Rajamohan said, noting that individuals could have 4 to 5 small meals to allow their bodies to adapt.

“But avoid eating foods that are high in sugar, fat, and processed ingredients. Eat more green leafy vegetables, proteins, and good carbohydrates. You should drink more water (2-3 litres per day) to flush out the kidneys and replenish depleted electrolytes and minerals.”

Dr. Rajamohan stressed the importance of gradually improving sleep habits after Ramadan and eventually restoring the original pattern.

“It is important to restore your original sleep pattern. Try to get up early, exercise, have a good breakfast, and avoid going back to sleep after breakfast.”

Post-fasting health check-up

Dr. Soubhi Ayoubi, Specialist in Internal Medicine, Aster Clinic, Halwan, said that fasting could have various effects on the body, and a post-Ramadan health screening helps identify any potential health issues.

“Individuals must schedule a health screening within 1-2 weeks after Ramadan to check for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, kidney function, and electrolyte levels,” he said.

Dr. Ayoubi noted that such screenings can help detect early signs of potential health issues, ensuring timely intervention and better long-term health management.

“Check your blood pressure to monitor for any changes or abnormalities, cholesterol for any fluctuations in lipid profiles, diabetes screening to detect any signs of impaired glucose regulation, and assess kidney health, especially for those with pre-existing kidney issues.”

5 long-term health strategies

  1. Maintain a balanced diet: Continue to focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods.

  2. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

  3. Do regular exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per day.

  4. Manage stress: Engage in stress-reducing activities like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.

  5. Regular health check-ups: Schedule regular health screenings to monitor your health and catch potential issues early.
