Dubai: Emirates Hospital, a subsidiary of Emirates Healthcare Company, held breast cancer awareness workshops in October for Emaar’s staff and visitors and Dubai Medical School (DMS).

More than 500 individuals participated in separate workshops aimed to combat breast cancer by educating people about the importance of regular check-ups for early detection of the illness, while offering free mammogram vouchers.

The presentation at DMS and Emaar was led by Dr Serife Simsek, breast surgeon at Emirates Hospital, who commented; “The stigma associated with any type of cancer has always been a major influencer for late diagnosis and this has had devastating effects for breast cancer in particular.”

This breast cancer awareness talk, he added, reflected the Emirates Hospital’s philosophy to support its surrounding communities by promoting a proactive culture. “We want to highlight the importance of educating yourself of potential risks so breast cancer can be efficiently prevented and treated,” he said.

The participants were given free health screenings for BMI (body mass index), blood Sugar and bone density, courtesy of Emirates Healthcare Company.

Dr Sama Zibdeh, specialist breast surgeon at the hospital, said: “Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women worldwide and it is estimated that one in eight women develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.”

However, she said the condition is treatable and curable if detected in its earliest stages. In that respect, we are delighted with the participation witnessed at the event. “We want to help create better medical access for those affected by breast cancer and put them on a path toward wellness.”
