Dubai: A dentist has been referred to court for practising medicine without a licence after losing her job at a hospital.

The Russian dentist working with a Dubai-based hospital was terminated from service and was practising cosmetic medicine without a licence at her flat in Dubai Land, Gulf News has learnt.

“The Russian suspect lost her job at the hospital where she had been working as a dentist and she had a labour dispute as well. She advertised on Facebook that she practises cosmetic and beauty medicine in her flat, where she welcomed an Uzbek woman for cosmetic interventions although she wasn’t licensed by the health authorities to do so. Thanks to the vigilant efforts of Dubai Health Authority inspectors, this case of practising medicine without a licence and many other cases have been exposed and the culprits were prosecuted and tried before the pertinent courts,” Ahmad Al Attar, Assistant Chief Prosecutor of Bur Dubai Prosecution, told Gulf News yesterday.

A statement issued by Dubai Public Prosecution yesterday said the woman has been referred to Dubai Misdemeanours Court where she will be tried for practising medicine without a licence and endangering the life of a patient.

The woman patient lost consciousness following botched cosmetic intervention during which the suspect reportedly gave seven injections that contained unknown materials. She was taken to a hospital and she woke up with extreme redness and pain.

Al Attar said: “The suspect was taken into immediate custody. During questioning, she claimed that the Uzbek patient pretended to have fallen ill and exaggerated that she was in pain in order to not pay the remaining Dh1,000 in fee. However, investigation has shown that she did not obtain the required permits from the health authorities to practise cosmetic medicine. The suspect, who pleaded guilty, has been granted bail pending trial.”

The interventions the suspect conducted on the patient included facial peeling and lip botoxing. The Uzbek woman had paid Dh700 and was supposed to pay another Dh1,000.
