Abu Dhabi Police are raising awareness of the things you shouldn't do with your car
Dubai: Tinting your car windows or merely taking a quick look at that incoming message on your phone while driving can cost you plenty.
To curb motorists from flouting traffic rules, Abu Dhabi Police are carrying out a year-long campaign to make drivers aware of the traffic rules.
Tinting your car windows is not a traffic violation.
But did you know that there are limits as to how dark your windows can go?
According to the federal traffic law, tinted windows that exceed 50 per cent can bring a Dh1,500 fine.
If motorists are distracted in any way, or text while driving, they will be slapped with a Dh800 fine and four black points.
A noisy vehicle that has had its engine modified can bring a fine of Dh2,000 and motorists will get as many as 12 black points.
Abu Dhabi Police have carried out a number of measures to enhance road safety, which include increasing the number of police patrols, installation of radars, and carrying out campaigns to raise public awareness, in addition to directing traffic during fog and other instances of low-visibility.
Heavy trucks have also been targeted by police, which led to a 58 per cent drop in fatalities during the first eight months of this year as compared to the same period in 2016, with the number falling from 31 to 13.
The number of people who suffered severe injuries decreased by 63 per cent, from 16 to six, from January 1 to August 31, while the number of accidents dropped by 54 per cent from 118 to 54.
