Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, yesterday held a TV interview with Mohammad Hassan Khalaf, Director of Sharjah TV and Radio.
Speaking about the topics covered by his book titled Power Struggles and Trade in the Gulf, Dr Shaikh Sultan spoke about the importance of the Arabian Gulf in terms of trade, colonial expansion and occupation.
The book covers developments in the region between 1620 and 1820. Dr Shaikh Sultan also highlighted reasons why the powers that controlled the trade routes decided to rely on the Arabian Gulf instead of the Red Sea.
“Trade ships need to restock on food, water and supplies when going on a long journey. The fact that a journey is long means that a large stock of supplies would mean a bigger load for the ship, leaving less room for the products. However, using the Arabian Gulf route allowed those ships to restock on basic supplies whenever they wanted due to presence of many ports along the Arabian Gulf shores,” said Dr Shaikh Sultan.
Dr Shaikh Sultan also covered various details regarding how the Arabian Gulf was geologically formed.
