Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on Thursday inaugurated the new Sharjah Municipality building in Al Musalla area.
Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, was present.
Dr Shaikh Sultan unveiled the plaque of the new building, marking its inauguration. He was then briefed on the various services that will be extended to residents at the new facility.
Dr Shaikh Sultan later toured the building and visited an exhibition highlighting the municipality’s history.
As he toured the building, Dr Shaikh Sultan viewed the historic record chronicling the government and municipal work in Sharjah City Municipality, one of the oldest in the UAE, which dates back to 1927.
Dr Shaikh Sultan also watched a documentary encapsulating different phases of construction of the new municipality building.
The four-storey building was built on a total area of 100,000 square metres at a total cost of Dh200 million. It houses 200 rooms including prayer rooms for men and women, a library, a theatre, activity halls and a parking area that can accommodate up to 250 vehicles. The building features innovative new green construction concepts to boost energy efficiency. Green concepts have been employed for lighting, ventilation, and sewerage in the building.
Dr Shaikh Sultan later honoured a number of government entities and contracting companies that were involved in implementing the project. He also met with municipal employees and impressed on them to improve municipal work in the emirate and to provide the highest standard of services to customers.
Riyad Al Ailan, Director General of Sharjah Municipality, recalled the grant provided by Dr Shaikh Sultan for establishing the new municipality building.
Al Ailan said that Dr Shaikh Sultan had instructed at the very outset that the building must be able to provide a number of services seamlessly to the public and its construction had been carried out with that vision in mind.
He added that the building with its unique modern architectural concept was sure to catch the eye of tourists too.
