Abu Dhabi: Nominations for the Abu Dhabi Awards (ADA) are expected to double this year with more than 3,500 nomination forms filled out at a cafe here on Friday.

The ADA is an annual programme that honours people who have selflessly contributed towards building the community and promoting social welfare. Its goal is to make Abu Dhabi a better place by encouraging and celebrating humanity and goodness.

Three cars, carrying application forms, entered the venue and six young promoters toured the cafe to encourage people to nominate a special figure for his or her good deeds.

"We are very lucky that nominations have started during Ramadan, when there are more people in cafes and malls," said Rabie Nammour, the ADA team leader.

Maryam Amiri, from the ADA organising committee, told Gulf News there was a noticeable surge in the last few days as people rushed to submit their nominations. "The end of the nomination period coincides with Eid, which means more people will be outdoors."
