Dubai: A new group called The Diplomat Business Club (DBC) has been launched to boost cooperation between top officials of foreign missions and corporate leaders in the UAE.

The DBC on Monday said it has partnered with various business councils, events and conferences to “ensure that the diplomats play a more active role in engaging with the business events thereby adding an international dimension to the business events in UAE.”

It was launched after several diplomats supported an initiative led by Youhannes Tecelmichael, Consul-General of the State of Eritrea and also Dean of the Consular Corps of Dubai.

One of the flagship events of the club will be to honour distinguished diplomats and business leaders by holding an annual award ceremony entitled ‘The Diplomat Business Awards’.

The club was founded by the Javed Malek, who was named DBC president. Malek who is also former Pakistani ambassador-at-large.

Speaking about the initiative, he said: “The idea of the club was initially floated as a medium to connect people, especially the diplomatic community, but after discussions we felt that we could expand it further as it was in line with our philosophy of expanding goodwill and friendship between people and countries.”

The DBC will also be partnering with the upcoming 2013 edition of the Annual Investment Meeting. A number of ambassadors and consul-generals in the UAE welcomed the development.

British Consul-General Edward Hobart said: “Facilitating business and supporting economic growth has always been a key aspect of diplomacy. International relations have been developed by trade between countries.”
