Dubai: You can never have too much of a good thing — and that is exactly what Dubai intends to do as it gets ready to set up five new residential parks.

The civic body  announced that it is in the process of laying out new parks in the areas of Satwa, Lusaili, Mankhool, Muhaisna 3, and Al Warqa 4 at a cost of Dh17 million.

“The Satwa Reservoir Park will be the first neighbourhood park that operates with solar power. The old park was built in an old area that has become a landmark over the years, which is where the water reservoir tower is now,” said Taleb Abdul Kareem Julfar, director of Public Parks and Horticulture Department.

He explained that there are currently 103 parks in Dubai, including two open beaches, four pond parks, 33 residential parks and 58 public squares.

The deadline of the project has not yet been finalised.

“Parks are the most important and busiest places in the country, in terms of the number of visitors and events organised by various community groups on special occasions,” said Julfar.

“The municipality will rebuild the Satwa Park so that it will become the first one in the emirate that works without using electrical power, or using cables from the electricity line,” said Julfar, pointing out that the park will cover an area of 1.5 hectares, while still maintaining the reservoir tank tower along with all the other previous facilities.

As part of Dubai Municipality’s project to make the city green, the first neighbourhood park in Lusaili will be built across 1.7 hectares, and will be completed in two phases. The first phase will provide services such as jogging tracks, a children’s playground and family recreational areas, while the second phase will consist of a football court and sports equipment.

All lights will be solar powered.

“There is no park in Mankhool, and that is why the need for one is great as it can cater to the needs of families. The park will be 1.3 hectares and will also contain several facilities.”

Julfar noted that a public square in Al Muhaisna 3 is currently in the initial development phase, which will be one hectare and also have solar powered lighting and irrigation.

Meanwhile, he also added that the public square in Al Warqa 4 will be built over 0.6 hectares and will provide visitors with shaded recreational areas and paved walking tracks.
